I’ve been working as a leader for nearly 20 years, but I want to see a bigger picture and learn from other leaders' experiences. I want to develop my strategic thinking and skills to help me take the next step in my career
Leading regulation and innovation in Swedish transport
Ingela Janbjer is a Section Manager at the Swedish Transport Agency. Based in Sweden, she has been with the agency since 2020.
As the manager of Traffic Regulation, her department works with regulatory development and government assignments nationally and internationally.
Ingela's department is divided into three teams: traffic regulations, authorisation and traffic medicine.
Preparing for the future of mobility
At the national level, Ingela’s work contributes to Sweden’s focus on sustainable mobility and urban innovation.
“We are currently working on how we can implement automated vehicles in Sweden. It’s a big challenge – not just for us but for all Europe,” she said.
Her section is also developing machine-readable rules – a key step in enabling digital and automated mobility.
“Machine-readable rules are necessary for micro-vehicles and automated systems to work together,” she said.
In addition, Ingela and her team have begun to work on the Fourth Driver’s Licence Directive, which aims to increase road safety and harmonise rules across the European Union.
“It focuses on digitalisation and modern solutions – we’ll be working on it for about three years, so that’s our focus right now, along with automated vehicles and machine-readable rules,” she said.
Developing leadership for the future
Ingela heard about the Emerging Leaders program through her manager.
“It was my boss who recommended it – she had read about it and had participated in something similar herself and thought it would be good for my future career,” she said.
What caught Ingela’s attention most was the international nature of the program.
“The first thing that stood out to me was that the program brings together leaders from across Europe who share similar issues and challenges,” she said.
Through the program, Ingela hopes to continue developing as a leader after nearly two decades in management.
“I’ve been working as a leader for nearly 20 years, but I want to see a bigger picture and learn from other leaders' experiences. I want to develop my strategic thinking and skills that can help me take the next step in my career,” she said.
“I would like to build my understanding of modern leadership practice and meet like-minded people – other leaders with the similar experiences and challenges,” she said.
Launched in 2024, the EIT Urban Mobility Emerging Leaders program is transforming the leadership landscape.
